Chrysalis is a spiritual growth experience for youth of any Christian denomination, similar to the Walk to Emmaus for adults. It is open to youth who have completed their freshman year of high school. It’s a 3-day spiritual renewal time providing an opportunity to learn more about faith, to experience Christian love and support, and to make new faith commitments. It is designed to inspire, challenge, and equip you for a closer friendship with Christ and for Christian action in your home, church, school, and community.
The three days focus on God’s grace, your experience with Christ as friend, what it means to be the body of Christ, and giving love to a needy world. You’ll worship with others your age, and participate in prayer, fellowship, creative expression, recreation, singing, and discussion. You’ll hear talks, given by youth and adults, which focus on the needs of maturing youth, offer the message of the Gospel, and the friendship and example of Christ.
Why is this experience called Chrysalis? A chrysalis is the growth stage between caterpillars and butterflies. It changes the fuzzy caterpillar into a butterfly with intricately designed wings and intense colors, even though at first it does not look like much is happening. It symbolizes the spiritual growth that is essential between adolescence and adulthood and how Christ can transform you into something beyond your dreams.
Chrysalis flights are generally held in the summer in the San Antonio area. They begin on Thursday evenings and end on Sunday evenings. Most often they take place at Mount Wesley Retreat Center in Kerrville. Ask our Youth Director, Phillip Hefner, for more info. The Emmaus community in our church provides sponsorship for youth who wish to attend.
Confirmation Class for 6th and 7th graders is offered at least every other year during the Sunday School hour from September through Pentecost (May or June) when we confirm all those choosing to claim the name Christian and United Methodist. We use the Cokesbury curriculum Claim the Name which calls the youth to discipleship and helps them to make an intentional commitment to Jesus Christ and his church.
Besides Sunday morning class, we also participate in mission projects, visit other churches and socialize a couple of times throughout the nine months. Adult mentors from the congregation are an important part of this journey as is parent involvement.
KDO is offered on Tuesdays and/or Fridays
from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
for children 18 months through 4 years.
Before/After Preschool care is available.

Welcome to UCUM Kids’ Day Out! We are so pleased that your child will be a part of our K.D.O. family. We are very proud of our program and are very excited about the 2010-2011 school year. Included in these information sheets are facts you will need to know about our K.D.O. program before your child begins. Please read them carefully and feel free to call the K.D.O. office any time with questions. The State of Texas requires that you sign that you have received and read a copy of these policies. By clicking HERE you can view and print a pdf version of these Operational Policies and General Information.
First Day of School: The first day of school will be Tuesday, 7 September 2010. Since the teachers need time to prepare their classrooms for the day, the classroom doors will not be opened before 9:00. If you arrive early, you must wait with your child until this time.
Arrival /Dismissal: A child brought to school must be left in the presence of a staff member. Upon arrival, each child must be signed in by the adult bringing him/her, noting the arrival time, name of child and who delivered him/her to the teacher. A telephone number where the parent can be reached must also be recorded. Each child will be released only to the parent or person designated by the parent. They will never be released to anyone else. If a person unfamiliar to the staff comes to pick up your child, we are required by law to ask for identification and to check our records to verify your permission. Names of all authorized car pool drivers and relatives must be listed in the office. Each child must be signed out at the end of their class time by the adult picking them up. Older siblings are not adults, so we will never release a child to a sibling younger than 16 years of age; and that sibling must be previously authorized.
Meet the Teachers and See the Classroom – Wed, 1 September 2010 beginning at 11:00am: Please mark this date on your calendar and make it a priority. We will meet at 11:00am in the Fellowship Hall for a quick introduction to our program. You will then be able to meet your teachers and see the classrooms. You will receive a postcard later inviting you to this event. We feel this is a very important day for you to attend. If your child is attending our K.D.O. for the first time, we strongly urge you to set aside this date and time.
Tuition and Fees: You are required to pay the $60.00 registration fee when you register. On the first day of school, your first month’s tuition and the first semester supply fee will be due. The supply fee is $25.00 if your child attends 1 day a week and $40.00 if your child attends 2 days a week. (This fee is collected twice a year, September and January). Tuition must be paid by the tenth of the month or a late fee of $10.00 will be added to your balance. The K.D.O. program is supported 100% by tuition.
Enrollment Forms: When you register, you will be given a packet of forms. All of these forms need to be filled out no earlier than June 1, and they are to be returned to K.D.O. on Meet the Teacher day on 1 Sep 10. The medical examination form needs to accompany your child when he/she visits the doctor for a physical. It must be filled out and signed by a licensed physician. Each child must meet applicable immunization requirements specified by the Texas Department of Health Immunization Requirements in Texas Elementary and Secondary School and Institutions of Higher Education. This requirement applies to all children in care from birth through age 17 years. (http://www.dshs.state.tx.us/immunize/school/default.shtm)
Classes Offered: The K.D.O. offers four different classes on Tuesday and Fridays. The classes run from 9:00am to 3:00pm. You may choose to come one day a week or you can sign up for both days. Each class has two teachers. This allows the children and the teachers to bond as a school family and really get to know and care about each other. They notice when someone is absent. They care about special events in each others’ lives. Listed below are the four classes, the age requirements, class size, and fees.
MONTHLY TUITION

BUSY BEES 3-4 YEARS 13 CHILDREN $100 / $170
The BUSY BEES class also offers before and after preschool classes from 9:00am-12:30pm or 11:45am-3:00pm. The fee for before and after preschool in the BUSY BEES class is $20.00 per session.
Lunch: Lunch is from 12:00pm - 12:30pm. Lunch is not provided by K.D.O. Please provide lunches that do not need to be warmed up.
Nap Time: Nap time is from 12:30pm - 2:30pm. Your child may bring a favorite stuffed animal along with a nap mat or blanket and pillow.
Snack: The children have a low-sugar, nutritious snack in class. All juice is 100% fruit juice. We ask that each parent take a turn bringing the snack for the whole class. Each class will have a sign up sheet and you can choose what day and what snack to bring. All snacks must be prepackaged, and in the case of fruit, check with the teachers on the size for being chopped or sliced. The K.D.O. staff members have all obtained health cards and have been taught the sanitary way to handle fruit. This is a health department rule. If you are unable to bring the snack on your child’s day, please call the office. We will keep extra snacks in the kitchen. (Birthday snacks must also follow the “prepackaged” rule).
Holidays: We do not follow the schedule of any specific school districts. Our schedule reflects what works best for our program. We will close our school in case of bad weather if the Schertz-Cibolo-Universal City district closes or if we decide ourselves it is safest to close. The holiday schedule will be determined once school is in session.
Illness: We ask that you not bring your child to school if you suspect he/she might be ill. A child who has a fever (within 12 hours), an upset stomach (within 12 hours), impetigo, hand and foot disease, fifth disease, chicken pox, strep throat, conjunctivitis (pink eye) or any other communicable disease must stay home for the health of the other children. Many children will “beg” their parents to bring them to school, but please remember the best interest of the rest of the children. The school will notify parents if there is a possibility of an exposure to a communicable disease. Please help us to do this by letting us know immediately when an illness has been diagnosed.
PLEASE CALL US IF YOUR CHILD WILL BE ABSENT. This will help you and the K.D.O. always know that your child is where he/she is supposed to be. If your child becomes ill at K.D.O. we will call you to come pick them up. Please be sure we know where you will be and how to reach you. If we cannot reach you, we will call your emergency contact person to pick up your child.
Discipline: Discipline at our K.D.O. program uses a positive way of teaching children how to manage their own behavior. We want to help children develop the ability to express their wants and needs appropriately by giving them a variety of tools. We will redirect the children to areas of play where they can be successful. We also establish some rules and teach children the process for following those rules, while keeping rules reasonable. We have no punitive punishment. We have no time out which can be humiliating to a child in a group situation. We have found that our discipline policy works very well in developing children who see the real abilities they have, their self worth as well as the value and abilities of others. They understand what we do and why we do it.
Parents Concerns: If you have a concern about your child, you may direct that concern to the teacher. If you are not satisfied after speaking to the teacher, you may contact the director. We ask you to contact us at the earliest point that you have a concern. We want to solve all issues before a problem arises. This is the best way to ensure your child will have a great year. Any concerns about the policies or procedures of the K.D.O. can be directed to the director. If that is not found to be satisfactory, concerns may be directed to the K.D.O. Committee of Universal City United Methodist Church.
We look forward to your child coming to K.D.O. We also look forward to getting to know you and beginning our communication with you. We hope you and your child are as excited as we are about the upcoming year!
If you have any questions, please call/Email the K.D.O. Director, Ms. Della Foley, at 658-5761 ext.2.

Accreditation and License
Our preschool has been accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children since 1992, and is licensed by the state of Texas. We have been recognized many times as one of the finest programs in the area. We serve children three through five years of age. We offer a developmentally appropriate preschool that focuses on learning through hands-on discovery and real life experiences, rather than through workbooks and worksheets. We have large classrooms with learning centers. Our classes have a small teacher/child ratio to provide top quality interaction and learning environment at all times. Each class has a lead teacher who is degreed, and a teaching assistant. We have exciting events to supplement our program throughout the year, such as a Thanksgiving Feast, Rodeo, Cowboy Cookout, Fiesta, Water Play Day, as well as our scheduled PE, Music, Chapel and much more. Our preschool allows a child to be a child, to know God loves him all the time, to learn to love learning and to be prepared to move on to kindergarten--all with fun and no pressure.
