Emmaus

The Grace Emmaus Community is a local Emmaus "Fourth Day" organization at Universal City United Methodist Church led by Lay Leader, Laine Fichter. Numerous "Fourth Day Reunion" groups also meet weekly at the church or in homes of individuals. Grace Emmaus Community gatherings are generally held the first Sunday of February, April, June, August and October at 7:00 PM in the Sanctuary. The gathering includes a short business meeting followed by a worship service with Holy Communion. After the worship service, snacks are served in the Fellowship Hall. All are welcome!
We are also part of a group of churches in the northeast area of San Antonio and the New Braunfels area called New Life Emmaus Community. The New Life Emmaus Fourth Day Community meets every month on the 3rd Tuesday at area churches.
What is a Walk to Emmaus? The Gospel of Luke relates the story of two disciples of Christ who were walking along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus sharing their concerns about the death of Jesus. As they walked, they were joined by a stranger who explained the scriptures to them. At the end of the day, they urged the stranger to eat with them, and as he took bread, blessed, broke, and shared it with them, their eyes were opened and they recognized the risen Christ. They then rushed back to Jerusalem to share the good news with others. The Walk to Emmaus is a 72- hour opportunity to meet Jesus Christ in a new way and experience Christian spiritual renewal and formation. The Walk is three busy days of singing, learning, laughing, praying, worshiping, and participating in small groups. Discussions center around fifteen talks given by laity and clergy. The themes of these talks are God's grace, how that grace comes alive in the Christian community, and how it expresses itself in the world. The purpose of Emmaus is to develop leaders for the local church. Emmaus will inspire, challenge, and equip the local church members for Christian action in their homes, churches, and places of work.
